Building Leaders in Innovative New Giving (B.L.I.N.G) - Youth Leadership Institute

209 9th Street, San Francisco , San Francisco County 94103

Business Details

Youth philanthropy is a powerful challenge to traditional philanthropy, which, in many ways, perpetuates the systems of power and privilege that it claims to address. By putting the decision-making power in the hands of young people—particularly low-income youth of color—youth philanthropy redistributes decision-making power to those most impacted.

Building Leaders in Innovative New Giving (B.L.I.N.G.) was founded on YLIs conviction that young people are deeply rooted in their communities and have developed knowledge and expertise from their lived experiences. This knowledge guides B.L.I.N.G.’s youth grantmakers as they discuss applications and award funding—they have a sharp sense of what projects will be effective for their communities and which projects will address issues that impact youth.

BLING youth grantmakers have provided up to $65,000 annually to 11-24 youth-led projects that directly address important social justice issues and inequities affecting San Francisco youth and their communities.

  • Are you between the ages of 11-24 years old?
  • Are you passionate about social justice?
  • Do you have an idea for making San Francisco a better city for youth?

About Youth Leadership Institute (YLI)

Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) builds communities where young people and their adult allies come together to create positive social change. Founded in 1991, YLI has sparked the leadership of more than 90,000 young people to solve pressing social issues and serve communities for over 25 years. YLI currently serves 1700 youth ages 12-26 each week, 90% of whom are youth of color, and 65% of whom qualify as low income. YLI implements community-based programs in Marin, Fresno, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. As a leader in the field of youth development, YLI intentionally synthesizes and packages the lessons learned in our programs in the form of toolkits and innovative training models that are shared with communities across the nation through YLI's Training and Consulting Services (TCS).
